Las Vegas Aces

Las Vegas, Nevada

The Aces hasen’t always been known by their current name. When they came into existence in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1997, the team was founded as the Utah Starzz. The team relocated to San Antonio, Texas, before the 2003 season and changed their name to San Antonio Silver Stars. This was a temporary move as the Aces eventually pitched their tent in Las Vegas, Nevada, before the 2018 season. Interestingly, Mark Davis, the team’s majority owner, is also the current owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Aces are currently one of the three WNBA teams competing in a market that doesn’t have a current NBA team. In 2021, Mark Davis hired Nikki Fargas as the team’s president and Becky Hammon as the head coach. The latter signed a coaching contract that made her the highest paid in the WNBA. In 2023, NFL legend Tom Brady bought a minority stake in Las Vegas Aces.

The Aces have enjoyed great success in recent times. In 2022, they won the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup and the WNBA Championship. The following year, they won the latter for the second consecutive time, a feat that no team has achieved since the 2002 season.

During their days as the San Antonio Stars, the team made it to the WNBA playoffs seven times during their fifteen-year stint. They once boasted a roster that included all-time greats, including Becky Hammon, who happens to be their current head coach. The Aces also had the likes of Sophia Young, Ann Wauters (a former overall first-draft pick), Margo Dydek, and Dearica Hamby. Now, they have the two-time league MVP, A’ja Wilson.
