The concept for the Love Show arose in 2000 when George Harrison had discussions with his friend Guy Laliberté, one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil. After three years of complex negotiations between the two surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison, Yoko Ono, and Olivia Harrison, representing their late husbands, an agreement was finally reached between Apple Corps Ltd, the company of the Beatles, and MGM Mirage.

In late October 2010, Cirque du Soleil started offering backstage tours of the Love Theater to visitors. The tours allow people to see the wings, training spaces, costume area, break room and even go up to the catwalks above the sound and lighting booths. The tours take place around the performers’ regular rehearsal and show schedule.

Leading up to the 10th anniversary of the show in July 2016, the producers updated aspects of the production. The changes included new imagery, costumes, acts, some new musical pieces, and the removal of others. The updates kept the show fresh while maintaining its essence.

The Beatles-inspired stage production Love follows the band’s history and music in a broad, non-literal way. Fictional characters from the Fab Four’s songs inhabit the show’s world instead of direct representations of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. We see the group’s origins in WWII Liverpool, their meteoric rise, psychedelic era, spiritual awakening, and 1970 breakup. The finale celebrates their reunion throughout the show. 

While the real Beatles don’t appear, some scenes feature mop-topped figures resembling them. The international cast of 65 embodies beloved characters from the band’s catalog. Each scene takes its name from a song or medley. Love pays tribute to the band’s legacy without directly depicting the members or reproducing their songs.
